This car comes up with the depollution fault on the display.

The car has a very complicated system involving the fuel cap and the volume of fuel added to control dosing of a chemical to renovate the particulate filter.

Many questions:-

What gives rise to the depollution fault indication?

Where do I find the dosing vessel?

Am I right to say that dubious people dig the inside of the particulate out and an MOT place has to accept that?

I think this car will have the Eolys dosing system ......the liquid lives in a plastic tank, alongside the main fuel tank. Typically it can last around 70k miles and it's recommended that a dealer replenishes the fluid.
When the tank is empty, the pollution fault lamp illuminates - but of course other faults can do the same.
It's not unknown for the DPF to be cut open and the guts removed, but the car should fail the MOT if it's not there.
Motman will be able to advise further!
John :)

Indeed. If any sign of missing cats or dpf's, it's a fail. Now, it's not uncommon for cats to be removed, the guts taken out and the car can STILL pass the emission test. Dpf's are a different matter. If you gut them, you have to mess around with the ecu to trick the car into thinking it's still there and working otherwise you get all sorts of warning lights and car goes into limp mode. The ministry are very hot on removal of these items though - so much so that any testing station found participating in removal of them will lose their licence to test immediately.

No actual experience of the Peugeot system but from what I've heard, it's a right faf to get them topped up - nothing like the addBlue systems most manufacturers use nowdays. Probably something you can't even do yourself. Come to think of it, probably cant even be done by a regular garage and has to be done by a specialist.

I think the EOLYS tank is by the NSR wheel. There are 3 types of EOLYS fluid so you need to have your VIN no. to get the right one. While you can refill the tank yourself you need the Peugeot computer system to tell the car the tank has been refilled or it still thinks it's empty.

Thanks for those comments.

My message is depollution system faulty.

I read somewhere that if the additive tank is empty then it gives a different message. Can anyone confirm that?

My MOT guy is somewhat helpful but I am not sure how he will respond to this one. Trouble is I need to MOT to tax and then drive at speed to try to regenerate the filter if that is still possible.

I was a member of the Peugeot 508 forum and the Citroen C5 forum before that ( same engines). I'm pretty sure that warning message would be for no fluid left in the reservoir. Ask on the Citroen forum , there are some really knowledgeable people there.

I've had a look on the 407 forum and the best answer I can find is no help at all!

'Depollution system faulty is a generic message that is caused by many different and unrelated causes. Therefore the next step is to get the fault codes read to find out why the message is coming up. '

Do you know anyone in your area with the diagnostic software?

If you post on their forum I think they tell you if a member in your area has the Peugeot diagnostic system. How many miles has this car done? If around 80-90k it's odds on it needs a refill of EOLYS.

As far as I am aware, the fuel cap has a sensor that triggers a dose of Eolys every time the cap is removed  and the car's ECU has to be told that the tank has been refilled so I'd agree - its genuine Peugeot software needed to sort this one.

Could be an actual fault with the dpf but as most have already said its likely the eolys tank is empty, can buy a refill kit for around £30 from euro car parts but then will need someone with semi decent diagnostic software to tell the car it's had the tank refilled.

If you were that way inclined a laptop with a Chinese copy of the delphi device ( about £60 on eBay) would do it and youd then have the diagnostic system for yourself for whenever you needed. If not you'll need a garage that has a decent diagnostic system.
