Hi

Bought a 10m extension kit from Maplins. Have found it utterly impossible to strip insulation from the skinny wires. This to such an extent that not sure if designed for that.

In the past I've used insertion tool, where you slot wire into position, but this looks like you have to bare wire before connection.

Attached are photos of junction box and wires. I've tried fitting into holes under screws, but no phone signal, so obviously need to get the plastic off, somehow.

I asked guy in Maplins, but they were clueless.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Is this a flat 4 core wire that is meant to be terminated by means of insulation displacement or IDT , where you push it using an appropriate insertion tool, you should be able to strip the pvc sheath and bare the inner copper conductors, after having ripped off the outer flat sheath. You didn't attach any picture.

My post crossed with your later post with pictures, you will most likely need to strip the ends of the 4 individual wires to bare the inner copper conductor to be terminated by screws or possibly a clamp under the screws, so bare about 3 -4 mm and insert each wire as far as it will go, having first released any tension from the clamps by undoing the screws, then tighten them up with wires fully pushed in. This should make a contact.

I find my teeth work OK for tiny wires, however you should try to cut a ring around the cable (with a stanley knife etc) where you want it to strip back to, then bend it about that point to help separate the jacket, then just slide it off. If it doesn't slide well, you can cut lengthways down the cable along the bit to come off.

Thanks. I've tried crimping tool, Stanley, scissors, razor, teeth without success. It doesn't come out in pictures, but almost looks like too small to have conventional bare wire underneath insulation.

I've been trying for days, and no joy.

Take it back to Maplins as unfit for purpose,

Is it their Code: BD05F

If it is BD05F then the cable appears to be terminated by a crimped on plug that plugs into an existing telephone socket. To fit into the crimped on plug the wires have to be small guage and as such are not suitable for screw down terminals such as in the socket supplied.

As ypu have use punch down IDC in the past buy some CW1308 ( twisted pair cable ) and a slave socket with IDC connections.

Hi

Thanks for this. Going back to Maplins after work for further chat with them!

I'm now wondering whether I should have attached the plug end of the extension kit to the new socket, with those skinny wires, punched into Master socket?? (I assumed they went the other way around)

Thanks again,

Used a lighter, following further conflate with Maplins.

Stroll on.

Thanks anyway.
