theres 2 ways it can be done,you can either drill and screw straight through the handrail using apporpriate screws WITH cups or obtain a plug cutter and make your own plugs using the same type of wood or you can buy the plugs from certain places,how i do it is use a 12 spade bit DO NOT DRILL ALL THE WAY THROUGH then use a smaller drill bit drill through,screw the handrail on where you want it,cut the ammount of timber plugs that are required and with a bit of glue tap the plugs into the hole making sure the grain is facing the same way,remove the excess with a chisel/plane/glass paper then stain/paint to required finish.
