Pink Floyd

Have to say that, not doubting their musical ability, but Floyd was one group I could never get into. A couple of their mainstream, big hits were OK. However, the rest is quite boring and sends me to sleep. Tracks that seem to have no direction and drag on for hours.

I really did try to 'dig' them a while back, especially when friends put their albums on, but it left me cold and glad when it was all over. (Bit like a night in with Mrs WS :D )

Without posting youtube links, who does it for you?

Would have to be Zeppelin, Purple or The Doors (although they can ramble on a bit). And definitely The Eagles.

Once again WS I have to agree with you. I think they were just a bit before my era.

BTW, I think my ears are getting slightly larger too

Did you mean the bit about a night in with Mrs WS?

Yes, a little bit before my time too. When they were big, I was too young to appreciate. Then I got older and appreciated all sorts of music from previous decades, but couldn't see what the fuss was with Floyd. I suppose it either grabs you, but if you have to put lots of effort to appreciate it, then maybe it's not you bag, man. I don't doubt their musical/technical ability. Prog rock is an acquired taste.

Weird thing is all prog rock is ****e to my ears....can't stand it. I don't think of Floyd as prog rock....I just think of them in some sort of league of their own.

Lucky me, I'm going to see Rick Wakeman at the Albert Hall in April.
Pink Floyd are great if you can put up with it, and Atom Heart Mother is the album to put anybody to sleep, but it's great - fried breakfast!

All this prog rock is hard work, but I'll give the Yes version of S&G (that's more like it!) a go.

Good lad, you can listen to it here . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EReWi009IL4

Turn the volume up.

PS,,, not bad to say they recorded this in 1972.

Came back from the pub and gave it a go - loud, as you said. Very impressive. The S&G original is in there.

A very enjoyable 10 mins worth.

Another approach to taking an established song and stretching it into a typical prog rock format, is taking a typical P R format and extracting the best bit in something short and to the point. This was done with good effect with Mountain's 'Nantucket Sleighride' to produce the theme for the 70s current affairs programme Weekend World.

I do love a bit of floyd, The Wall was an album I was brought up with. But For me Led Zep, AC/DC, Def Lep, are may fave bands.

Why is it when you're a bit lost when driving you HAVE to turn the music off, evertone does it but how does it help!!

DSOTM and Wish You Were Here are my two fave PF albums.

I have consulted my NTB classic rock recommendator and it suggests you check out the following classic albums:

Supertramp - Crime Of The Century
Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
Boston - Boston
ACDC - High Voltage
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Queen - A Night At The Opera
Free - Fire And Water
Bad Company - Bad Company
Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle

This could on and on and for me that's ok.

My pennies worth of fave albums would have to start with

Billy Joel's - Songs From The Attic
Dire Straits - Dire Straits
The Eagles - Hotel California
Nazareth's - Razzamatazz
Jeff Wayne's - War Of The Worlds

Good Night...pinenot :)
