has anyone got one of these or ever used one? are they any good? supposed to be good for soldering in confined spaces like a loft.

the bes.co.uk website has one, it's item number 16481

about £90 and comes with a 15mm head, the 22mm head is another £7 ish!

had one when they first came out.
they are not cracked up to what they are meant to be, least with your gas bottle its safe to put it down when finished.
they take ages to cool down, and you can only change the heads once cooled down or you can't get them off.
not the sort of thing you leave on the rafters at that temp.

i've got one and used it a fair bit. They are great when working in confined spaces or spaces you really wouldn't want to lite up your torch!

Agree that they take a long time to cool down, but they do come with a little stand to rest them on while they do so. I usually leave them to cool down a bit then unplug and just dunk the heads into cold water before they go back into the van to make sure.

On the plus side they heat up very quickly and maintain the temperature, solder runs are even, no marking of pipework on exposed work. Would never recommend them as a replacement for a gas torch, but definitely a worthwhile addition to the toolbag!

At that price they appear to be good value, however 220w will as is pointed out in the BES page can take two minutes to heat up.

I suppose it depends on how often you will be using them.

Also how big your hands are, my Rems Contact 2000 tongs are a bit big for my hand size, its a useful addition to a blokes Plumbing and Heating armory with 2000w of power, but its five time the price of what you are presently looking at.

I see that Rems do a Hot Dog 2, a smaller version of the one I have but I cant say what they cost.

The electric irons can take a bit of getting used to.

I have one of those, yes they work, slowish but useful especially on 15mm.
Trouble is, I have 13,476 tools, but I'm doing well if I can find six, and that iron thing ain't one of them.

Glad I'm not the only one who spends more time looking for stuff than doing it.
