Unsure if this under stair ceiling has asbestos in it. When we got the house, there was no mention of potential asbestos in the under stair. Should I proceed in putting a plaster skim?

How old is your house

Only way to know for sure is to test a small piece

doesn’t make any difference. just prepare the surface and skim over it

Thanks for the responses.

Built in 1925 apparently. Would like to do that at some point, but since it’s undisturbed, I’m going to leave it alone, just to be safe.

Any advice on how to prepare the surface before skimming.

remove / unpin the cables slowly . if your concerned about asbestos don’t sand or scrape or make dust out of it.
you will need to tape any cracks with plasterers scrim tape then paint the whole of the area with feb blue grit and wait for it to dry.
you can buy both items in toolstation .

Is this in an under stairs cupboard? Or actually in the hall/landing?

Thanks for the detailed advice, will do exactly that.

This is under the stairs but the door to it is at the back of the stairs, rather than the usual side of the stairs.

If this is basically inside a cupboard, give it a coat of thick paint and either forget it, or if possible, cut a sheet of ply to cover it.
You could use gripfill to glue the panel on, but a couple of self drilling screws won't generate much risk

With most artex, the stress that people suffer when worrying about it does more harm than any asbestos in it ever will

you’ll still have to fill around the edges of the ply board . shabby

It sounds to me that it's inside the cupboard under the stairs?

Yeah it’s basically the cupboard under the stairs, which we use as a shoe room. Will definitely keep your advice in mind about the panel. Thanks so much.
