Hi.
We’ve moved into a 1980’s bungalow. In the loft, there’s a section of the ceiling over the sitting room (large) where plasterboard has been attached on top of the joists in addition to the ceiling plasterboard. The space between the original ceiling and the new plaster board has no insulation in it but there is insulation on top of the new plaster board albeit not much.
The ceilings in several rooms were replaced with new a few years back. I think and my guess is that they ran out of time / money to finish the rest of the house and in order to get rid of the excess plaster board, instead of paying for disposal, they nailed in the loft on the joists.
Obviously it’s not at all load bearing and my concern is it will be affecting the insulation properties of the ceiling…can anyone think of a valid reason why this would have been done?
We are also having to reroof the whole roof so will also need to upgrade loft insulation to current depth standards for building regs. Would the building regs chap have a fit if the plaster board was seen or does it really need removing rather than just putting more insulation on top of it?
