I want to put up plaster coving (127mm, paper covered) between an already painted wall & ceiling. I know that I need to provide a key for the adhesive but does the paint need to be removed all the way back to the bare plaster or is it sufficient to lightly sand the paint surface to provide the necessary key ? Or is some other method of preparation recommended ? I have begun to sand a strip of paint from the wall, which is difficult enough, but removing it from the ceiling will be a nightmare.

I used gyproc cove adhesive but seal the wall and ceiling surface.
You can use many types of sealers.
Quality PVA mixed 50/5O
Gardz
Artex sealer was my favourite but hard to come buy.
Beeline sealer is good value.
Don't need to seal the coving but seal the dry powdery cut edges.
When you seal the cut edges you can put some adhesive in the end joint before you fit. Adhesive will oozze out.Never get a cracked joint.
Some manufacturers bag up board adhesive in smaller bags and call it cove adhesive. It's ok but not over painted surfaces which it warns you about in the data sheet.
Mark 85mm down wall and 85mm
That's 83mm plus 2mm for adhesive.
Just scratch through paint a bit before you seal. Just enough to be sure adhesive has something to stick to.
Damp sponge to clean as you go.
I seal coving with Gardz before I emulsion but that's optional.Just found it a better job to do that.
With coving keep bottom level and finish on a length long enough to twist so bitter is level..
