I am intending on taking down the ceiling in an eaves bedroom. it is lathe and plast and has a number of undulations. I will put insulation between the rafters and then plasterboard. I'm wondering if I use tapered board will I need to skim the ceiling other than the joints? How good a finish will I get if I just paint onto the plasterboard without skimming?

thanks

Did mine exactly the same way, cos I'm no plasterer.
Used ready-mixed finishing plaster from Wickes - really smooth - and taped the joints.
Finished off with a bit of sanding. (Like they do on DIY SOS)
I defy anyone to tell the difference between that and a fully-skimmed ceiling once painted.
A tip I was given on this site -
Why go to the mess of taking down the old ceiling?
Just screw the new boards over the lath and plaster.
Or, at least, just take out the areas that are really sagging if they look like they won't screw/pull back.
;)

Thanks Johnboy. Reassuring to knoe that the finish can be good, provided I get the joints right. What about the added weight of another layer of plasterboard if I don't remove the lathe and plast. I like the idea of skipping a messy job, but don't want the roof to collapse either!!

well worth hiring a plasterboard lift to do the job. Makes life very easy and accurate as you can get very close joints on it. Even with three people it can be awkward. it should cost about 30 for a weekend and its well worth it and easy to do on your own

The weight is not a problem.
If you were converting your loft, Building Control would insist you put another layer of plasterboard on all the ceilings below, and then skim it as a fire barrier. ;)
