A former fireplace has been opened up and raised to allow our gas cooker to live in it. The walls of the fireplace/chimney are being drylined and tiled, the extractor hood will vent up the chimney and so occupy most of the roof of the fireplace, but can anyone advise a material to protect the remainder of the fireplace roof?

Building Regs require minimum extraction rates in new or refurbished kitchens now but I seem to remember reading somewhere that LABC will not accept venting the kitchen extractor up a chimney. It may not matter if there is no inspection work involved but if you having a visit, your BI may refuse to accept it; I’m not 100% sure but you should check.

You could use Cement board. You should also fit some form of cowl to the chimney pot to prevent water ingress.
