Hi,

I am having my bathroom ceiling replastered as it is in a dire condition due to a leek in the roof.

To save some cash I decided to plasterboard on top of the existing ceiling in preparatrion for the plasterer to work his magic. Unfortunately along one side the ceiling joist is 170mm from the wall. Will this be an issue when plastering?

Thank you in advance.

170mm is ok so long as you are scrimming the corners which may be unlikely if you are not plastering the walls. Back in the day when we used jute scrim, 170mm would be no problem at all.

Put a 100mm x 50mm timber in the loft so that you have something to screw to.

You don't necessarily need anything as beefy as this. If space is a problem (wires pipes etc) then any timber fed into the gap from above can be screwed into from below using the existing plasterboard for stability. It need not even be fixed as long as someone holds it whilst you pop a couple of screws in.

Thanks Chaps.

I have already screwed in a piece of wood and I have used a million screws.

I have miscut my plasterboard and have left a 15mm gap. Will this be an issue?

BTW the walls are being replastered as well.

Cheers
