Hi, I've just bought a 1930's house and wanted to do something about the heat loss from underneath the property.

I've been told that it's a good idea to lay plastic sheeting between the carpet/flooring and the floor boards on the ground floor to stop and cold air from coming in.

There is a space of about a 1 to 2 foot below the floor boards on the ground floor and so am wondering if this will be okay to do? Or will it cause the floor boards to collect moisture leading to rotting?

Tha passage and kitchen will also have laminate flooring laid on top of it and so once done, I don't want to have to lift it up again - for at least another 10 years or so!

All advise is welcome.

If you really want to stop the heat loss, insulating between the joists is the way to go especially if you are prepared to remove the boards anyway. You can either use Rockwool suspended on netting fixed to the underside or draped between the joists or fix a rigid board insulation between the joists. The cavity beneath the floor should be ventilated with airbricks at ground level. If not you ought to fit some. Provided there's plenty of ventilation there will be no issues regarding any condensation/moisture problems. Post back if you want more info.

Thanks for that, to be honest, I just want a quick and easy solution, lifting out the old floor boards would be too much trouble for me if I could get away with the plastic sheeting idea?

In your opinion, there is no problem with the plastic sheeting in that case?
