Hi everyone.....i moved to my house this summer.....and now the winter is here....i thought it time for the heating to be put on, but.... heating is not working....so we are all very cold :(

My boiler is a glow worm space saver....the hot water is working fine, but when i turn on the heating....i am getting a strange clicking noise from inside the cupboard where the water tank is  and no heat to the radiators at all. The clicking noise is coming from a white square thing that is attached to the pipe  which i dont have a clue what it is  Can anyone help me....please ;)

Many Thanks

probably a motorised valve, there should be a lever on the side, try sliding it across. might just be stuck

Hi...there is no lever....the plastic white box has an S on it??
Thanks anyway :)

Like Rob says it is probablely the 'motorised valve' I would think the clicking is related to the gears on the small motor inside the actuator head.
These valves do appear to give problems. The valve has three positons starting with hot water at one end of its movement and ending with central heating at the other end. Often the valve never gets across from the mid position to the heating position or if it does then the little microswitch inside the head fails.
You can try this little test. Select both HW and CH, If your HW is already satisfied the valve is supposed to move to CH and I suspect in your case it does not. Now if you run off some HW or if you want increase the cylinder stat (any will do) you create a HW demand and in doing so the boiler will flash up and both HW and CH will be supplied,so you radiators will then come on. The bad news is that as soon as the HW is satisfied again (which won't take long) the cylinder stat cuts off the power to the boiler so you dont get any more HW or CH.
So if you get hot radiators just for a few minutes you will then know what the problem is.

I'm willing to bet that this thing is a motorised valve and the synchron motor has died. Others have suggested the same. Symptoms will be as you describe.

You can't fix it yourself unless you are handy with screwdrivers and a multimeter. Are you?

If not, get a heating repair specialist in. Not an installer, someone who specialises in repairs.

Cheers, Mike

Since its making a clicking noise I expect the syncronous motor is alive and well but the gear cogs have worn out.

Depending on the make and model it will have to have a new valve or perhaps just a new head.
