That's where the creative side kicks in Roy. The leg span was to big for the lump of wood I had available.

The most sensible response I have heard so far is to make a feature wall. I think that would work as the radiator is at the top of the stairs. Thanks for all the suggestions.
 
Rad cover as suggested above...
Bit of a crap idea. As then he would need to remove thermostatic heads for fear of the house getting cold.
Alternatively buying expensive thermostatic valves with external sensors.
