My grandad had water coming through his ceiling and i found that the flexible hose was leaking on the toilet.

I found a new flexi hose with valve but the olive was in the wrong place so i replaced the pipe from the stop tap and then fitted the flexible hose. Now when i turned the water on the cistern is overflowing, so i checked the float and it don't look like it's catching on the sides so i was wondering what i have done wrong.

The only thing i can think of is when i cleaned the stop that as it was corroded that a bit of wire wool has got into the water and is trapped somewhere.

probably what`s happened - if it`s one of those small float valves ( torbeck) just go and get another one - Fluidmaster are good - less hassle than messing around with the plastic innards

Thanks for your reply.
The only thing i know about the filling valve is it's about 20 years old and it's a really quiet fill and takes about 5 mins to fill the cistern up, so if you have a big log and it don't go down the first go you got to wait 5 mins for the cistern to fill up  There is a small arm that comes out of the filling valve and then you attach a small float to it so i was hoping i could clean it to save buying a new one.

You just need a ball cock valve rubber washer two minute job !

It`s not a ball cock - they have 7inch short arms - it`s a friggin modern torbeck or similar - obviously set to the wrong pressure to take so long filling . Get it out and get a Fluidmaster in 8)
