When seperating the two (eg. for a syphon change), do plumbers automatically replace the doughnut, even if it wasn't leaking?

I always change them when I fit a new close coulping kit, as they come with it.

Might as well change it whilst you have the cistern off, as said above they come with the kit anyway and there cheap enough.

Yes, and if its a one piece syphon, replace with a two or three piece syphon.

Or, better still, a flapper valve. Syphons are so 19th century.
