It seems to be most prominent in the bathroom, every 30 seconds or so there is a short rattle, this happens out of the blue when no taps or appliances are running, heating is off etc.

This morning it started and sounded like it wasn't going to stop. I turned on the basin mixer tap in the bathroom and it stopped, then started again when I turned it off. Did that a couple of times and it eventually stopped, reverting to the intermittent rattling instead.

I have noticed that I'll sometimes hear the toilet cistern briefly start to fill after a rattle.

Any ideas how I can resolve? It may actually drive me demented.

TIA!

Hmm, on closer inspection it seems it might be the toilet cistern, looks like it might be the feed pipe to the cistern doing the rattling. Not entirely sure why though yet.

Check the pan, if water is seeping in then this could be the problem

Thanks for the response. Yes, there is a slow drip into the pan, and the cistern 'tap' is opening regularly to keep it topped up. The banging happens when the tap turns off.

So it sounds like you might need both an inlet valve and flush valve or at least a seal.
