I want to tile the bathroom floor with travertine, it is a Newley laid 12mm green chipboard I understand I need to over board, do I use ply or tile backer board? If I use ply would 9mm be ok? I understand the backer board is 6mm. Is it worth the extra for tile backer or is it over kill in this case?

Thanks

Assume you meant 22mm chipboard?, I would use 18mm ply minimum with travertine, they are fragile and slightest movement will crack them.

Hardiebacker is your best bet. 9MM ply IS NOT suitable for tiling whether you screw it down on 22mm chipboard or 222mm chip. Your substrate is as strong as the layer it's stuck to. Yes, Hardie will be overkill but do you want to chance it if your going down the natural stone route?
