We've received a quote to get some pointing work completed, and the builder has quoted " Point stonework with cement ". I seem to get some conflicting information on whether pointing with cement is right or not. The building is on the seafront, exposed to the wind, rain and spray from the sea...so, the air is salty.

Can you help. Is the cement pointing OK, or should something else be used?

Cheers

Duncan

What is the original mortar, lime or cement?
Sorry Stuart, that I don't know. The building is approx 100 years old, and I don't know if pointing has previously been renewed, or if it's the original.

How would I know what it is?

At that age it was probably built in lime. Normally lime mortar should be used for a job like this, although NHL 5 lime would be better as it's on the seafront.
