Polishing concrete

I have just had a new fireplace fitted with slate hearth, which is a bit smaller than the original concrete/stone hearth at floor board level.

I want to make it all look nice and want to avoid tiling the original portion of the hearth, as I don't want it any higher than the floor level.

Does anyone know of a good way to "polish" the stone to get a nice finish on it? There are a couple of chips on the surface and I was thinking of "skimming" it but am not sure if this would bond to the original surface?

Thin skims of sand/cement, concrete is destined to crack up and fail. You could possibly try some epoxy resin and then paint, but the best bet is definately going to be chopping it down and covering it with something else. (Wood could work)
