if it lifts out of the plughole there will be a screw on the bottom of it undo the locknut and screw it out a bit further then tighten up the locknut .
Sometimes the screw fitted in the plug is a bit short, depending on the thickness of the basin.
If it is too short, find or buy a longer brass screw. A steel screw - even a plated one - would rust very quickly.
Just an aside - There's no need to lift the plug more than 1/3 of it's diameter clear of the plughole (say 11mm on a 32mm waste).
Chris ( or Ann ? ) certainly keeps his basin very clean underneath!
Apart from the screw on the plug there is another adjustment visible on this picture. Its the two screws which set the vertical rod position where it meets the horizontal operating arm.
Thanks to everyone for all your help. Tweeked the horizontal and vertical rods, which raised it - then couldn't keep the plug down! But by tightening the knurled knob it is now working perfectly[/b].
