Hello,

We have bought two posts 3 x 3inches and 7ft tall to use as a support for apple cordons. The posts will be placed about 3 metres apart, with galvanised wires between to tie the three apple tree cordons to. Should the posts be concreted in or can we use metal post holders (or both) or do we just bash them into the soil.

Many thanks in advance

As long as they're not under too much tension then the world's your oyster... metal post holders will be fine (as long as the under soil is sound)....or dig a hole and put in the post and a bag of postcrete..... np !

I wouldn't just hammer them in... as it would be very hard to do this with 7ft posts, and you wouldn't get a strong fixing!

If your post are 7Ft you should be able to use a spud bar to start you off. You'll be able to make a hole about 18" to 2 Ft deep to drop your post in before bashing it into the ground. As you won't be digging any earth out, you'll have a good tight hole.

It's a long steel pole, about 5Ft long and quite heavy. Also called a digging bar. The one I have has an end on it like a fence post. It's used to make a hole for a post by driving it into the ground where your post is to go. It'll break or push aside boulders and give a hole that will hold your post while you drive it in the rest of the way.

That kind of thing.
