Aaaaggh my boiler wont fire up. I dont know much about them. Checked water in loft/header ok. No air locks in system. When you turn water or Ch on boiler and pump makes all the right noises but will not fire up. The little ignition light that clicks is working ok. Sods law, would happen when grandkids staying! Could anyone kindly advise please? Many thanks.

Sorry potterton netaheat 50e. My wife just reminded me that when it was serviced a couple of years ago the engineer said that the fan was on it's way out. Was making weird noises!! Does anyone know how I can check the fan please? Sorry for sounding so dumb. But you know these things always catch you when your skint.

apart from saying your boiler is a dinosaur there isn't much to them

the regular problems are
1. the bracket that holds the spark electrode corrodes and falls off
2. the electronic control pack dies

I told you boilers aren't my thing, apparently the fan is working!
Will have to call in the cavalry.
Can do without the blooming expense though.
Thanks.

In spite of what Kevin has told you these are not suitable for internal DIY repairs.

They have a positive case pressure and are potentially dangerous.

You need a competent boiler engineer who agrees before coming that he knows how to repair your model otherwise you will just get over priced quotes for replacing the boiler.

Be aware that your boiler is old and that many of the parts are not readily available!

Many thanks.
I have a registerd engineer calling tonight.
With my luck I bet it's going to have to be a new one!

Only a very few gas engineers specialise in repairing boilers. Most prefer a more profitable £1600 job to fit a new one than a £90 repair job.

With a little effort they CAN usually be repaired. Its just that few will want to!

You need one of the repairers !

Many thanks.
Engineer turned up and said I need new fan and new gas bit (regulator? valve?) giving me quote later. Have not a clue what to expect. What was strange was my brother had said he had a brand new boiler (still in box)to give me but the engineer refused to fit it? Saying it was rubbish. It came from B&Q. Called a heatline Vizo.

The fan sounded likely and they are about £100.

the gas valve is probably obsolete but we dont know if its the gas valve or something else.

Heatline Vizo is OK if properly fitted on a clean system but they have a bad name because they are so cheap that they are never fitted properly. We charge £840 to fit a combi and anyone who bought their boiler for £399 expects it to be fitted for £150 ! Nobody can do that properly for £150, for a start it needs £30 of chemicals.

Tony

He is charging £250 to do valve and fan.
I will have to start saving to get other boiler fitted next time, which with my luck will be soon!!
