I just replaced the automatic air vent on my boiler that was leaking. Easy enough job..... Once done, I noticed the water pressure was dropping all the time. It was clear that it was the pressure relief valve leaking. I replaced this...again very easy. Now the boiler fires up for about 5 seconds when heat or water called for then the pilot goes out and it all shuts down. I've checked the pressure of course but the boiler was working fine before I touched it (exept the leaks). Could the new air vent be faulty? Ant other ideas? Thanks

air lock in heat exchanger
try turning pump by hand, black plastic nut on front pump

when i replace prv i also check air pressure in expansion unit

You say turn pump by hand.... I know the pump's whizzing round as I took the nut out to allow any air out and water dripped out. How do i check the air pressure in the expansion unit?
I take it you don't think the new automatic air vent would be faulty? Presumably they are quite a basic unit?

Water dripping out is not evidence of the pump turning.

How do i check the air pressure in the expansion unit?
With a tyre pressure gauge.

It might be, but have you opened the cap on it?

Ok I meant that when i took the nut out to bleed the pump it was still tuning as it was on the overrun so I 'm fairly certain it's turning. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

So if I check this expansion unit with a tyre pressure guage. What am I looking for and how do I remedy whatever result I get? Unfortunately this boiler is 45minutes drive away so I need to get everything set before going down there. Thanks

turn off power to combi charge to 2 bar place water container and towel under pump undo nut front pump, move nut with spanner one or two turns left and right it should move air in heat exchanger and you should hear air released from air vent it normally works for me.
if not drain combi leave aav open and refill to 2bar
when system is running release pressure to approx 1.25-1.5bar cold
if you check this forum there is loads on recharging expansion vessels
