I need a new one. My 16-year-old JSP Powercap still works OK - being a hay fever sufferer, just used it in the garden for an hour with high pollen count and I'm OK - but is showing its age. It's very tatty, the velcro securing strap is dying and the visor is heavily scratched. I sweat a lot and the fabric parts aren't removable for washing; also there's no bump protection, although later models seem to have that. Powered airflow essential as otherwise I melt. I'm considering an Axminster-branded item, their 101809. Any views or recommendations please?

And a supplementary question. Why are these simple things so flipping expensive? The Powercap cost me about £200 back then and they are closer to £300 now. The Axminster is £300. Cap, visor, filters, motorised fan, battery, charger...not a lot.

There is a detailed and positive review here:

On the few occasions Ive used a full face respirator the main factor has been whether the seal fits around the face without any gaps that allow air in. That cant be checked until you have the product in the hand.

As for cost, there has been real inflation in the cost of materials in the last few years.

If it's a powered respirator, surely the airflow will be out through any leaks, not in.
