Sorry for my terminology.

We have a plastered metal upright in the extension and when preparing for painting I found some blown plaster. Removing this I found a little rust and then the source of water ingress which has now been resolved and dried.

Next step is to replaster. But first to prepare.

I've sanded off the rust but what should I do to prepare the metal for replastering.

It's a small area thankfully.

Just a metal primer and undercoat?

Thanks

Do you mean a steel beam? Or some random non structural piece of steel?

Blup

Pillar/stanchion. Didn't think it mattered. Just was asking how best to prepare a metal surface to plaster on to

Structural steelwork is usually encased in plasterboard or similar for fire resistance. So is your rust on the steel? Or on metal beading in the plaster?
