your victorian fireplaces are going to suck vast amounts of warm air out of the room unless you do something to stop it. what sort of fires have you got?

brass vents in front of the fire were used in better-quality Victorian houses.

At the moment one of the rooms has a tiled gas fire and the other one has an insert type gas fire. I plan to replace the room which has a tiled gas fire with an old victorian cast iron fire.
