Hello All,

I'm in the process of building a platform for my new shower tray in my extension. I have a large tin of wood and metal primer left over from another project.

Would it help protect the chipboard floor from moisture if I painted the floor and platform with this primer, or do I need to buy PVA?

any advice would be great.

thanks,
Alex.

I wouldn't use chipboard flooring in a shower or bathroom, no matter what you treat it with it won’t really make much difference; if it gets wet to any degree it will just disintegrate. Use exterior grade plywood, especially immediately beneath the shower or bath.

I've bought exterior grade plywood for the platform, but I can't do much about the floor, as it was all fitted by the builder. :(

PVA washes away in water.

I sometimes use a wax water repellent stain on chipboard (the stuff sold for sheds and fences) but although it will repel the occasional drip or splash, it will not protect the chipboard from falling apart if it gets seriously or repeatedly wet (e.g. a leak)
