Can anyone recommend any products/tips? The top layer has worn away completely leaving bare wood. Im thinking of staining rather than a varnished finish as I feel it would be harder wearing but any suggestions most welcome. Due to the nature of the business a quick drying product would be most welcome too!

Stains do penetrate a bit whereas varnishes just sit on top. I always recommend sikkens stains, the two coat system would be best but i think its solvent based, have a look at the bedec range as well, a colour like solid pine in the barn paint may well be tougher than a stain

I have done table tops with several coats of Sikkens THB and they have looked great for years and are really hard wearing to glasses and cups etc.
