I am hoping to refresh the internal window frames in my home over the next few weeks. Most are in pretty good nick and I want to keep them that way.

What is the best way to find out what's been used for the current finish? The wood looks natural with a slightly shiny finish, and water beads on contact. Would this be a clear satin varnish? Once I know what's already on there what's the best way to give it a protective refresh?

The one window that is scrappy is the bathroom. It feels more like bare wood, and there is some staining, which looks too deep to sand out easily. Any tips doing the best I can on this window?

Many thanks for any advice, it is much appreciated.
