Hello there can anyone educate me in this? I need to do the bulk of this work myself as i am a pensioner.. I am aware of the safety aspect of electrical work done by such as myself and fully intend to have my work checked by an electrician once done. I want to fit my shed with 4 double sockets and 4 fluorescent 4ft tubes..I want to operate a 1500watt bench saw and various bench tools ie router, drill etc.. two sockets each side of 12ft x 8ft shed approximately a 32ft run all around. The cable will have a run of about 20ft from my inside supply to inside of shed, running out through exterior wall and into my shed, this i propose to do in armoured cable, what size and type should i buy? I then propose to run this if required into a box of some kind (advise please ) and then run the socket cable out from there, what size and type of cable should i use? Also can i then just plug in my lighting tubes from one of these sockets? In fact any advice at all would be very much appreciated, Ted.

Hi Ted,

These days, much electrical work is regulated. This means that the local authority must be informed if work is done in certain "risky" places.

Outside is one of those. There are two options:
1. Notify the local authority, pay their fee, and they will inspect at certain stages. Note, you will have to know exactly what you are doing and they will expect it all to meet curent regulations. You'll need calibrated test equipment to test what you have done as you'll have to demonstrate that the work meets BS7671.
With respect, I rather feel that your level of competence means this is a non-starter.

2. Use a registered electrician. He/she will do the installation, testing, certification and will be able to notify that the works meet the relavent standards.
Registered electricians are not permitted to "sign off" somebody else's work. So it doesn't work like you do the wiring and the electrcian checks it out.
The best option is to find a registered electrician. He will advice you what is required - if he is a good 'un, he may let you do some of the donkey work (digging the trench for the armoured cable, clipping the cables the HE will specify, etc). That will keep the cost down and keep you on the right side of SAFETY and the LAW.

Details on the legal stuff is on the WIKI at http://www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics:part_p:diy_electrical_work_and_the_law

Probably a bit late but...

I have just done exactly this, though the wiring from the house is notifiable and should be done by a competent/registered electrician. I have buried 4mm SWA cable running in high-impact plastic trunking.

I have fitted 3 x twin 32W high-frequency fluorescent lights rated IP65. This helps to avoid the ingress of bugs (etc) prevalent in illuminated out-buildings, reduced moisture from damp air and condensation, and an added safeguard in the unlikely event of a leaky roof.

I would suggest daylight tubes - whiter light, reduced eye-strain, and better overall for a working environment.

All the best,

FJ
