Hi all

Somehow I have managed to lose keys to a thumbturn euro cylinder lock.

Can these always be opened from the the outside when locked inside?
As I know most standard euro cylinders do not let you open from one side if key is inserted on the the other side.

I have just tried it with several spare cylinders I have here and none will operate from the other side with a key in the opposite side.

Cheers

The thumb turn is effectively a permanently installed key, so it has to allow external opening when in the lock position. Otherwise you could only open from the outside if it wasn't locked. Certainly it works that way on my thumb turn.

I recently changed my mums Euro cylinder to a thumb turn and when I checked, yes, we could still unlock the door from the outside when it had been locked with the thumb turn from the inside.

There might be 2 types then?
It’s a standard 100mm (50/50) ams I have lost the key.
Tried about 20 spare keys in it and no joy.

Don’t mind if I have to swap it for a standard cylinder tbh.

I just need one I can open from other side with key inserted in opposite.

Cheers

The Cisa Astral S euro cylinder can be opened from the other side even if there’s a key inserted in the opposite side. It’s a high-quality cylinder and would be my choice.

Evva offers an external key override option for its premium products. However, these euro cylinders are pretty pricey. Their advantage is that you can optionally also add 3-star anti-snap protection.

Just in my mates and talking about.
He pulled thumb turn out of the draw and it rotates both sides with key inserted.

It was one of the brands with a letter Q on it.
Seem loads of them about.

Surely they all do as it’s reversing the safety aspect to outside as u can not gain entry.

I’d expect a thumbturn to work regardless of whether a key is in the lock’s other side.

The Cisa Astral S euro cylinder is a solution for a lock that’s key-operated on both sides. The key on one side works even when there’s a key in the lock’s other side.

That’s my thinking.
Safety both sides.

I’ve had to remove door stop and grind deadlock of from the front entrance/ wooden door.
Knightlatch was usual simple.

The thumb euro was fitted under a grant scheme years ago.
It does not need one with regards regs but it’s a better option to gain access next time imo.

There was someone here recently asking about locks that would function if the interior key was inserted. Do you have links? if yes, I will try to find the post. Tnx

Barnsley Lock & Safe are reliable and sell Astral S euro cylinders. Their website states: “Unique clutch cam as standard—keys still operate lock when another key is left on the other side.”

I had an Astral S euro cylinder in my previous patio door, so I know that it works as advertised.

Also, here’s a link regarding the ‘external key override’ option for Evva euro cylinders:
