I have just got back from drainining my Dad's open vent system down. There seemded to be not too much sludge in the system even though we used Fernox restorer to clear the system down (thought there might be a blockage in the pipes). We then vented the rads & turned the system on only to find no rads working upstairs or downstairs (previously they had worked upstairs)
I then thought the next stage should be to look at the pump. I then decided to check the pump, before dismantling the pump I audibly checked to see if it was working- was making a noise but wasn't convinced that it was turning correctly. The pump seemed to be extremely hot (too hot). After disconnecting the pump & dismantling it, it looked like the vent pipe was quite dirty, although the pump impellor itself was free flowing. When looking at the pump motor it seemed like it might have burnt itself out (blackening around magnets). Would replacing the pump solve the intial problem which was the downstairs rads not working or is it a case of there is too much gunge in the system & replacing the pump would only be a temporary fix until itself would be under too much stress & burn itself out possibly again. Or might it be that the pump was on it's last legs & needed replacing.
I will post the pump name & vent device that was fitted - just not to hand at the moment. Any thoughs appreciated as my parents are now in the cold & I feel somewhat guilty!!
