Hi there,

We’ve just accidentally knocked off a radiator TRV at home today. Luckily there’s no leaking or anything, however we’re left with the valve pin exposed and the radiator is on full.

Are we able to buy and install a new replacement control do you know, without getting a plumber out? I’m guessing they will be really busy on Monday and Tuesday. Hopefully there’s no chance of it randomly leaking too? It seems intact still.

We have microbore pipes (I think 8mm).

I’ve attached a picture of the exposed valve and then another of another radiator to show the type of TRV. There seems to be a mixture of different brands around the house and I think the newest is actually a Honeywell one.

Incidentally, if we wanted to replace some of the others that are a bit old and discoloured now, would we need to replace the whole valve including pipework or can we just replace the controls without getting a plumber?

Thanks in advance

The plastic part is the thermostatic head. It can be removed (by unscrewing the knurled ring) and replaced with new, or swapping with the head from one of your other radiators.

I don't recognise the brand. Look for any names or refnos. It is easier and cheaper to buy a complete new TRV and just swap the head. No plumbing skills are required as there is no water in the head.

Some of the experienced plumbers on here may recognise yours and know the one you need.

Yours doesn't look very old, so start by looking in your local plumbing merchants and chain stores, the installer probably bought it locally.

Here are a few to get you started:

If you get one of a different make, it might or might not fit, so try to get the same. If you can work out the brand, a similar valve by the same company is worth a try.

If you have to change the entire valve, and you are not used to plumbing work, you will find it more difficult, and may end up with a leak.

Does look like a Honeywell, but as @JohnD has said, you can just obtain a replacement with one from another valve if they’re standard sizes (most are).

Great, thank you very much for the info. There’s a few different brands of them dotted around the house. The one that broke is actually one of the older discoloured ones - here’s a photo of one just like it. I think Landis and Gyr might have been taken over by Siemens....

In terms of sizing, the actual valve joint has 15 stamped in the metal. Does this mean anything? If I can’t find the same make I’ll try just to get any locally as long as it’s the right size but I’m just not familiar with which size it will need to be.

Thanks again

Thanks, the one in this picture is one that must have been replaced more recently. There’s a few different brands dotted around the house and Honeywell is what our plumbers used a couple of years ago. I’m not sure if they just replaced the plastic head or the whole valve.

THe 15 stamped on body is probably an indication of the pipes size (15mm). To be honest, if it was a branded valve in, then a branded valve head should fit. John has already given you some listed.

Thanks. Will have a look at the options.
