Thermostatic valve with the head removed. Possibly it was removed because the wooden object on the right hand side of the photo is too close to allow the head to be fitted.

No wooden object when we moved in,so no thermostatic head was on there

Maybe had to be left fully open as a bypass for the hot water? Is it a gravity hot water system?
It is gravity fed, copper water tank and header tank in the loft, oil fired boiler, y plan heating / water system

Yeah, our back bedroom rad used to get hot in the summer with hot water only when we had a gravity hot water system.

Did you find a solution or is it one of those things you just have to put up with?

Sorry, not back bedroom but back living room rad - it was nearly 30 years ago! I think I closed it off but left the bathroom rad on. Can you try that? I think that’s what normally happens when you have gravity hot water. Our boiler was floor mounted downstairs with the airing cupboard next to it and not long after I wanted to lower the hot water cylinder which was mounted at the top of the airing cupboard (so that we could actually air clothes above it). I did that but had to convert the system to a fully pumped one.
