I have some that say there designed for the trv to be fit on the flow. So are these not bio - directional? There modern ones got from the merchants last week.
All the TRV is, is a temperature activated valve that stops and starts the flow of hot water through a rad. Whether it's on the feed or the return side of the rad makes no difference as it still turns the flow on and off regardless of which end it's on.
You can still get directional TRV's but they can still be on either end of the rad, just need to make sure the valve is correctly orientated, if on the flow the arrow points towards the rad, if on the return the arrow points away from the rad.
The flow is the hottest pipe between the two and if you fit a single direction TRV the wrong way round then you may get noise nuisance when it is trying to close, most TRVs these days are bi-directional but some need adjusting depending on which side they are installed, as said though the worst you will get if you do it wrong is noise nuisance (which can be extreme to be honest) but no safety issues if you get it wrong
