Do any of you engineers on here use these sites or similar as these to get any work? If so do they pay off or just a rip off?

i would never pay some muppet web site to get work from.

how can you bid on a job you've never seen

Furthermore, why would anyone employ the services of someone that has to obtain work through such a site?

Mathew

Fair comments, hadnt really thought about it that way, was mentioned in a conversation earlier today so thought i would ask opinions here

My response was perhaps a little curt.

I think these sorts of services/sites seem all well and good on the surface, but when you scratch it away to look at what's actually going on there is a lot more to it than first meets the eye.

For both parties the arms length starting position is too far apart in my view. An unknown customer with an unclear requirement looking for services from an unknown supplier for the lowest possible price is not a good recipe for success for anyone. It may be fine for the purchase of certain types of goods, but not services where the issue of quality has got to be a fundamental aspect, if not the priority.

In short: I think they are potentially good for the owner of the site/service but perhaps not so good for everyone else.

Rubbish site
Any feedback rating not 5 stars is deleted, as are any negative comments. Try and find anything about a trader that doesn't say absolutely brilliant even though they were closely related to a monkey. My plumber turned out to be a a white cousin to aUrangutan from Fife. Kitfit Domestic Gas. 50% of installed radiators are leaking.

i've done work on rated people, but i only pay for the customers details if no one else has, all the ones i've been out to (i always look at every job before pricing it) i've got the job

i used one of these sites when i wanted the house rewiring. Was amazing how many people can price something as big as this without seeing what was involved. The guy we choose was honest and said he couldnt quote with out seeing so we asked him round and after a few other quotes he got the job. While he did a decent job with the electrics he left the house under about a foot of dust never once hoovered or covered anything.(we went away on holiday and decided with him this was best for min distruption to us). We had to have plaster out 3 times after to correct his poor plastering also.

So in short, word of mouth is the only way to go. I wouldnt employ anyone of these sites again

ive used rated people a few times.. but its a bit crap as most people on there are shooting for the lowest possible price and some complete arsehole timewasters too, however I did have a couple of good jobs that have led to recommendations so not a complete loss.

I signed up to a three quote special offer for £12. Few jobs looked worth quoting on!

I got one job so it worked out well from that point of view but the customer was a fraudster!

She had been given a ceiling price of £500 by British Gas to get a new gas supply pipe fitted as they could not do it in a short time. She got quotes of about £340 for the work but when it came to payment she wanted an invoice for £500 but to only pay the quoted £340.

Hi,

Not all customers of rated people and the like want something for nothing?!
Being female, not knowing any traders myself and wanting to ensure I am not ripped off is a good reason for the use of such a service.
I now use rated people when I embark on a new project and have had trades out on two occasions so far and both trades wouldnt quote without seeing the job.
If trades did quote me on the three lines I wrote then I simply declined their quote.
Both traders have completed the work to a good standard and I would use them next time I need such services.
I actually went to rated people because I had used a trader who was recommended and I had nothing but trouble and
Needed another tradesman to put his work right!
I guess their is good and bad in all trades and the skill is actually being able to determine whether a trader is the former or not!

The dangerous thing about building a business model based on these sites and there feedback, is it leaves you very vulnerable.

One unreasonable customer ( which we have all had) and your business and hard work becomes worthless overnight.

I have seen this happen to someone.

I found rated people to be the worst out of the lot, parasites

There are unscrupulous people out there from both sides.
Of course poor feedback can upset a business but maybe I am nieve because I cant imagine why poor feedback would ever be left for a job well done.
I would hope it is only a trader who tries to cut corners, does a poor job or be greedy that suffers poor feedback?
