RCD suddenly started tripping...

There's nothing different being plugged in, it's just started tripping every few hours (not at night though).

Could the RCD be on its way out?

First thing is unplug and switch off everything to ilium intake any faulty appliances. Typical things are items with elements and water involved like washing machines.
If it still trips then likely there is a fault somewhere which may need a electrcian with test kit to find.
Check outside lights etc for water ingress.

Perhaps he meant ileum intake.

Although that's not something you'd want to do with an appliance, faulty or not.

I'm not sure that would really have a lot more practical meaning. Ilium and Ileum are both anatomical terms, but neither is really designed to have 'intake' after it. I suppose an ileum can at least 'take in' things, whereas an ilium really can't!
