We have removed our entire chimney stack and breasts (upstairs only). The chimney stack used to rest on the outer side of the solid wall and on the internal chimney breasts.

Having removed the chimney breasts, a 1.5 metre wide section (and 2.5 metres in height) of our external solid wall is now only one brick thick.

1. Can we simply build the inner 'leaf' (I know that technically there is no such thing with solid walls), out of blockwork? Or do we need to build this out of brickwork to match?

2. Should we grind a couple of mortar joints in the existing brickwork and install some wall ties to connect both 'inner' and 'outer' leafs together?

Blocks will be ok, but it is sometimes better to use a similar sized brick to simplify tieing in to the existing masonry.

Use either fish tail or frame angle ties (galv or stainless).
