Real wood veneer on stair treads?

I'm laying laminate flooring throughout a 3 storey house and have been umming and aahing about what to do with the stairs. I was going to sand the stairs and then paint the risers white, leaving the treads varnished wood. However, it turns out that the treads have been filled with filler.

I'm now thinking of skinning the treads with veneer and was wondering if anyone has done this successfully before?
