I have 9 internal doors to fit on new frames. Doors are standard sizes, solid pine and will take standard handles with only one thumb lock on the bathroom.

I live in Northern Ireland so prices are always cheaper than England etc. What would you expect to pay for hanging these and fitting the handles etc.

I had a few quotes from tradesman and of the three, two came in at £25 and the third said he does them for £20 but since I had 9 to do he would do them for £15 each (he was a joiner!......maybe a bad one granted). That seems cheap and although the old adage of you get what you pay for sits well for me.....the price is attractive.

How long would it take to hang 9 doors. Almost all of the frames are pretty square so I don't envisage any patching needed.

Can I trust the cheaper quote - thoughts please!

well i would do that ammount in a day, allbeit it might be a long 1 IF the frames are not plumb/square/level etc,
but im in the south east of england and my price would be in the region of £30-£35 p/door.

the cheaper quote might be because the fella really needs the work?

there used to be an advert in a loal rag to me,from a chap who would hang doors from £15,but after looking at some of his work, well it wasnt to a profesional standard in my eyes.

I don't agree that cheap is necessarily crap - he just might be bad at pricing like someone else I know

Give him one door to do on the basis that if you are happy he can do the rest. But it's good to see him give a discount for the 9 doors, when the others did not

Generally, a joiner is more careful than a carpenter - but I'm not sure if you differentiate in the two types in your part of the country

We don't differentiate between them no. I will give him the job and base whether he will complete or not on the first door.

Its interesting that you think it can be done in a day. I thought it would have taken 2 (hence the concern for what he is working for on a daily basis), however, £150 a day for a trades person is about par in this part of the country and hes not far of that. I will be happy to give him £150 if the job is good.

Its always difficult to know whether he is decent and needs the work, hence the competitive quote or like you allured to is someone who works below standard and that's why he needs the work :)

I guess time will tell. I get worried when I read threads where joiners/carpenters charge £50 and up to hang a door - at that price I would be hanging them myself (albeit not quite to the professional standard - but not to far away. P.S. not doing as don't have the time)

Thanks for your thoughts guys

I've had a quote of £40/door from a local tradesman, but the doors are really heavy and all trimming/drilling/hinge fitting etc would be into solid oak, plus there would be three hinges per door.

Is this excessive? Location is South-East Wales.
