We had about 2m of our garden wall taken down when the house was extended so i need to have this rebuilt.

Was planning of giving it a go myself. Appreciate that it should be done in lime mortar but can i use normal cement mortar for building and then point in lime or should i use lime throughout?

is there any specific lime i should use? i have found some readymixed on the internet but its Lincolnshire lime - does this matter? will it give a different colour?

If you are using lime build it all in lime, not just the pointing.
Use NHL 3.5 lime, and a 50/50 mix of sharp and building sand. 3/1 mix mixed for 20 mins in the mixer, left another 20 to fatten up, then mixed again for a few mins.
Leave the joints overnight, then hit them with the churn brush the next day.
Protect the wall from sun, rain, frost, but keep the joints damp.
