I am interested in all aspects of building and I would like to know whether any of the heavy hitters on the forum have any Building books they'd recommend?

I have an interest in general building, something that would explain how domestic house are built (e.g. from substructure, superstructure, roof, floors, walls, ceilings, electric, plumbing etc)

Books on defects and how they are identified, rectified etc

A one, stop shop for building construction, repair and maintenance would be ideal

Many thanks

There is a good selection of titles on eBay which are great options pricewise and, although not up to date with current Regs, specs or Standards, will give you a very good insight into how to build most things. Most major construction tasks like joinery, brickwork, plumbing, plastering etc hasn't changed massively for hundreds of years it is usually the tools that progress making it faster, easier, and safer but plenty to learn from the older books. One like the choices below give a broad range of knowledge and search for newer versions of those and similar Editions too ....

The Brickwork and Associated Studies series of books deal with everything masonry/brickwork/substructure/setting out etc. The Architects Pocket book has a bit on everything building related.
