Reduce room by 40mm

Hi, I'm replacing my shower with a full width tray in the left hand end as seen on the photo, except it's 40mm shorter than the room will be when tiled.

The wall is a museum of decades of bodgery, nothing is flat or consistent.

My thought was to make the wall secure then 40mm board over it then tile over that. It should also help with keeping the room a bit warmer as it's an external wall.

Any thoughts on what type of board and what type of fixing method please. I'm ok losing 40mm width and having a deeper windowsill.

There are a few ways to this, a few of us will have different ideas..........
I would just go for the quickest and easiest option : 25 mm battens on the wall, with standard 12mm plasterboard. No need for fancy backerboards or tanking at that end. In theory, that makes it a couple on mm short, which will be ideal for getting the tray in, and perfect once a tile lips over onto it.

With second thoughts, depending on what you find when you take off the panels? at the showerhead end, you may be looking at boarding more than one wall !

I’m just a DIYer so this is not professional perspective, but having recently stripped out my bathrooms I won’t be replacing the shower areas with ordinary plasterboard. The old plasterboard behind the tile was black, presumably mould due to moisture penetration through the grout over years.

I’m using Marmox boards in the wet areas which apparently are not just water resistant but waterproof. I’m also using m/r plasterboard in the rest but I know others think there’s no point if it’s going to be plastered and painted.

You might also want to think about insulation if it’s an external wall.

Like I say, I’m only a DIYer…

30mm insulation board with 10mm shower panel on top . Improve the room insulation and quick and easy option .
