Our Edwardian/late victorian terrace has had the fireplaces downstairs blocked up and removed. Can we reinstate them by just knocking a hole in the wall where they used to be? Not too worried about having them working as prob can't afford that yet, but rooms would look much better with a focal point.

Not sure what the situation with chimneys is although the bedroom fireplaces are still there, although with boards across the fronts.

Thanks

Just open it up and get a chimney sweep to clean and check it for you. He will be able to advise you if the flue etc is suitable for use with an open fire.
