Relaying Patio

Hi all,

My patio has finally reached the state where it's becoming so uneven that it's dangerous to walk on. The slabs themselves are fine it's just the mortar seems to have dried up and given up the ghost (I'm not sure exactly when it was laid).

Is there a simple guide as to how easy this would be to do? The patio is probably in the region of 7 x 5 ft and has a step down to the garden for which the bricks would probably need replacing as well as they're crumbling.

You say the slabs are fine - do you mean they are still solidly in place, or are they rocking?

Sorry - slabs are fine as in they're not broken, they do rock.

Hi, I've been reading up about this, and it would seem that if the slabs hadn't been rocking I could have perhaps got away with just filling in the gaps again - however, there does seem to be a definate gap beneath some of the slabs and they rock to quite a degree.

It looks like a bigger job and will require more time and power tools than I'll have at my disposal - is it going to be a case of taking up all the slabs, providing a level underlayer and then relaying the entire thing?

I hope not...

Also, related to this, I have a brick wall at the side that is crumbling quite drastically, it's not used to support anything, but is there anything I can do to slow the brick decay down, or should I arrange to fix this (pull down and rebuild with the correct bricks...) at the same time as the patio?
