I am struggling to remove a downlighter - see photos.

I can pull the unit away from the ceiling but I cannot see how to release the retaining clips. The clips seem to have some plastic lugs which are preventing the clips from being pulled clear.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Just keep pulling. Pull harder.

However. Those spring clips will flip and hit your fingers and it hurts so grab them as you pull out, so you hold clips tight to light.

Yes, pull harder and twist as you pull.
As soon as those clips are out enough to bind close to the body, do so with some cable twisted tight with grips etc and then they won't ping your fingers as it breaks free of the plasterboard.
