we moved in to a new house last year and the previous occupants decided they would paint all the wood work in white emulsion paint. we have found it a little tricky to remove the paint over the last year to prepare the woodwork for gloss but have now decided to decorate the hall and landing which obviously in the stairs which has over 40 spindles and a number of newels.
Are they any tricks to getting this paint of quickly or is it just going to have to be sand paper and elbow grease? Its like rubber and a complete nightmare.

Any help appreciated

Don't try to remove it - you'll be there for ever.

Sand thoroughly, apply a good quality waterbased undercoat and two coats of waterbased gloss/satin/eggshell trim coat, and it will be fine.
