Removing Gloss on internal door frames

Hi everyone, I have recently had a internal door frame and door renewed due to it being rotten. Now i have varnished it and it looks pretty god damn smart. Problem is our lass wants them all to look like that however we can't afford to renew all the door frames so what is the best way to remove years of gloss and get back down to bare wood.

I used a heat gun (about £15 from Wickes) and a scraper, then sanded with a detail sander.
