Hi. I have used meths and wire wool to remove dirty, old shellac from a footstool with turned legs. It has left a black residue of dirt in the grain which is proving difficult to sand away (because of the awkward fiddly shape & the fact that it's ingrained). Is there an easier way to clean off this residue? Do you think sugar soap will do it?

Thanks. I have already bought some sugar soap so will try that first. If it doesn't, I'll give oxallic acid a try.
